Brief History of Ganesha Festival

According to some Historians Ganesha Celebration and Pooja can be traced back to 271 B.C , some compelling evidences show that Ganesha Chaturthi was started by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja and the festival continued until Britishers conquered India .This festival lost states patronage under Britishers and remained a private festival until Bal Gangadhar Tilak , The Legendary Freedom Fighter, revived it and made it the Grand Festival as it is today. He also used the festival as a mass mobilization strategy against the British empire.

Celebration

Ganesha Chaturthi or Ganpati is a Ten-day long  hindu festival celebated to honor  the elephant headed god, God Ganesha(younger son of God Shiva). Ganesha is the 1st to be worshiped among gods in Hinduism. Hindus pray to God Ganesha to overcome obstacles in life.
Hindus make a huge clay idol about 21 meters tall of Ganesha  and use ganesha decoration items to decorate and a Pandal or Mandhapa before the festival and on the first day of the Festival the Huge Ganesha Murti is installed in the Pandal in the public and the priest performs pooja and invites God Ganesha from kailash Mountain to be the Guest for the next 9 days. Hindus also install miniature Ganesha murti in their home on the 1st day and perform pooja and bhajans. People also visit the pandals where the Large Idol is installed and pray every day for next 9 days. On the tenth day the festival ends with a large procession carrying the God Ganesha Murti through the streets where people see the Large Murti before murti visarjan in the sea or any other water body where the murti dissolves in the water and is believed that God Ganesha returns to Mount Kailash.
In India it is celebrated across India but the most important places to travel or make a short Trip to are Mumbai , Pune ,Goa ,Andhra Pradesh , Hyderabad, Surat and Chennai.
